You or your referring physician can make a consultation appointment at Pluta by calling 585-486-0600. Your insurance provider can tell you if a physician’s referral is required prior to your first Pluta visit. Generally, you will be seen within 72 hours based on appointment availability and the collection of various tests, scans, and other information related to your diagnosis.
Parking is free just outside our first floor facility and wheelchairs are available for your convenience.
Once you enter the Center, you’ll check in at the reception desk in the lobby. Sometimes you’ll need to fill out some preliminary paperwork prior to seeing the physician. Have a seat in our comfortable reception room until a member of the intake staff brings you and your family into an interview room. There, demographic information is obtained including name and address, birth date, referring physician name, insurance information, etc. The medical secretary will review Pluta’s privacy policy and you’ll sign a release of information form that will allow us to share information with medical facilities as needed. You’ll also be asked to sign a consent form so that we may provide information to your insurance company.
As part of our privacy initiative, your photo will be taken for placement in your electronic chart. This enables our staff to readily identify you in our reception area when you come for subsequent appointments.
When the physician is ready to see you, a nurse will bring you to an examination room. She will measure your weight and height, take your blood pressure, and review your health history. Then you will see the medical or radiation oncologist.
Your physician’s consultation will typically include a review of your general health as well as the symptoms and findings that led to your cancer diagnosis. An actual physical examination is also an important part of your session with the doctor. Then, the doctor will discuss with you and your family members your diagnosis, options and recommendations for treatment. This discussion will also include the benefits and risks of treatment as well as its potential side effects. You might find it helpful to bring with you a list of questions to ensure that all your concerns are addressed. Many times, patients will ask a family member or friend to act as a notetaker during the consultation.
Other members of the Center’s staff may also be present for part of your consult in order to address any concerns you may have. For instance, our oncology social worker is available to answer questions related to employment, financial, psychosocial and other issues. Our registered dietitian may participate if your treatment could result in a significant impact to your nutritional needs. These individuals will also be available to you during and after treatment.
You should expect to spend up to two hours during the consultation appointment.
