Prosthetics, Adaptive Clothing & Wigs

A prosthesis is an artificial body part replacement, such as a limb or breast.  Prosthetic devices are adapted to reproduce the form and, as much as possible, the function of the missing part. The Committee on Prosthetics Research and Development of the National Research Council coordinates the design and development of prosthetic devices.

Prescriptions for adaptive clothing, like compression sleeves and stockings worn by those at risk for lymphedema, can be obtained from your surgeon or physician.

Since some insurance policies cover the cost of prostheses and compression garments, be sure to contact your insurance company prior to purchase.

Wigs & Turbans

Hair loss is often a side effect of cancer treatment. Fortunately, there are many options for temporary hair replacement including wigs, turbans, decorative scarves and hats.

It is a good idea to prepare for hair loss before it happens. Shopping around and being a savvy consumer will only make your hair replacement decisions easier when the time comes to choose a wig.

Wigs and hairpieces vary extensively with regards to price, size, length, color, and accompanying services. Therefore, we recommend that you ask for a free consultation with a salon so that you can have the following questions answered satisfactorily before you make a purchase.

Ask a salon if:

  • It offers discounts on wigs for cancer patients.
  • There is adequate privacy at the salon for trying on wigs.
  • Wigs are in stock so you can try them vs. choosing from a catalogue.
  • Styling and cutting the wig are included in the price.
  • The wig is returnable before it is cut and styled.
  • It provides any services after the wig is purchased, i.e. restyling, and if there is any additional charge.
  • It offers any other headwear, such as turbans, scarves, or hats.

The cost of a hair prosthesis can be a financial burden. Please contact your insurance company to determine coverage for hair prosthesis.

“Look Good, Feel Better”
Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the National Cosmetology Association, and the Cosmetic, Toiletry, Fragrance Association, this free program helps cancer patients undergoing treatment deal with hair loss and changes in personal appearance.

Trained cosmetologists will provide information, advice, and hands-on assistance with wigs, scarves, turbans, cosmetics and nail care.

Monthly sessions are held at the American Cancer Society office located at 1400 Winton Road North and at local cancer care providers on a rotating basis.

Please call 585-288-1951 for more information.
